Fourteen thoroughbred polo ponies, valued at around $200,000 each, tumbled disorientated and dizzy from their trailers at the world series of the 105th US Open Championship. This is the most prestigious and oldest polo tournament in the United States. One by one the horses collapsed onto the grass. Officials are bending over backwards to find the cause of the problem.
Vets scrambled to pour water over the feverish animals. It was to no avail. Fourteen horses died only forty-five minutes before the commencement of the game. Blue tarps were quickly erected to form a barrier for the dying horses, away from the glare of the champagne drinking, ultra-rich and up-market crowd. Rumors eddied through the crowd like wild-fire, as the announcement was made to substitute an exhibition game for the featured tournament game.
