Pigment powder

Postby XbongwaterX on Wed Jan 14, 2009 12:42 pm

I couldn't figure out what thread to put this in which would actually get me an answer, so don't flame me. This is a legit "Ask a Pro" question.

So, while looking around a local store for a blackbook I came across a whole bunch of little jars of pigment powder, which I don't think I've ever considered using before. Is this primarily for oil paint? If I mixed it with white smash could I mix up some crazy colors since it's pigment based?

inb4 "try it and see for yourself"

i don't wanna buy some white smash and f*ck up like half of a bottle of it because the sh*t wont mix.

If anyone knows much about the matter, lemme know.

smash is xylene based, like paint, so it should work.

If you guys ever need help with inks pigments and anything in that section PM me. and it should work but be careful, wear gloves and sun glasses.

and if u plan to do a whole bottle i suggest buying atleast 3-4 bottles.

and if your mixin pigments with anything like smash, use chemical pigments, and thin out the pigments in a cup then add it (if u thin out the pigments u will have to use less.)

All i got to say about pigment, is that its weak. But at the same time badass. Pigment is simply color, it will mix in to damn near every medium. I know for a fact pigment in smash will work because i've put pigment into another white pigmented ink and it worked decently. It would've been flawless if i wasnt trying to tint a f*ckin quart of ink at once. An 8oz bottle will be no problem to tint. Just put the pigment in a small paper/plastic cup first, and pour enough smash in the cup with the pigment to make a paste out of it. Try to mix as much of the clumps out BEFORE adding it to the white. Once its in the smash you may have to wait over night for the pigment to "marinate" to witness the full strength of the pigment. Good luck, post flix.

EDIT: Any idea about how many mL are in the jars? The amount of pigment needed varies from color to color as well. For example, red is going to be severely over powering compared to yellow, or any other light color. Or, if you want to make blue, buy the darker blue so you wont have to use as much. Since you pry won't be mixing more than 8oz of ink at a time, GO SLOW. Have some patience........

I've never seen xylene based paint. I've seen oil based, water based, egg paint, and milk paint. I have however, seen paint that contains xylene, spray paint for example...

i'm pretty sure that there are a few different types of mineral spirits. and i've heard that you can get xylene at hardware stores, but i haven't bothered to look.
